During a deepening economic crisis it becomes equally more important and more difficult to stay healthy and, as much as possible, positive. Although rising prices, outrageous medical costs and the daily stress of an uncertain future make that seemingly impossible, a number of readily available remedies may help preserve our health and well-being. While insignificant in terms of expense, their potential benefits may be priceless.
Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
One of the most popular folk remedies amongst alternative health enthusiasts, apple cider vinegar has been touted as a cure-all for everything from acne to arthritis to headaches and fatigue. Used for centuries by princes and peasants alike – as far back as ancient Egypt and Hippocrates himself – apple cider vinegar is a medicine cabinet in a bottle.
The most popular brand is Bragg’s Organic Apple Cider Vinegar which includes the “mother”, a highly nutritious accumulation of enzymes which settles at the bottom of the bottle.
For weight loss take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water before every meal.
For energy take a teaspoon of ACV in a glass of water any time you feel sluggish; do the same for headaches.
For general health and wellbeing take a 1 tsp-tbsp in a glass of water 1-2 times daily.
Never drink apple cider vinegar straight! It’ll be hard on the taste buds and throat as it is highly acidic.
Blackstrap Molasses
High in iron and potassium, unsulphured blackstrap molasses is second only to apple cider vinegar in popularity and healing properties, but takes the lead in treating conditions such as anemia, fibroids and even gray hair.
For best results use the following recipe:
1 tsp Blackstrap Molasses
8oz warm water
Dilute the molasses in the warm water and sip, preferably on an empty stomach. You can also increase the molasses amount to a full tablespoon or more at your own discretion. Want an energy boost to kick start your morning? Consider adding a tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar to pump up your stamina.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Besides the countless household uses for hydrogen peroxide, it has many health and beauty benefits. Here’s a short list from Wikipedia and EarthClinic.com:
- Like many oxidative antiseptics, hydrogen peroxide causes mild damage to tissue in open wounds, but it also is effective at rapidly stopping capillary bleeding (slow blood oozing from small vessels in abrasions), and is sometimes used sparingly for this purpose, as well as cleaning.
- Hydrogen peroxide can be used as toothpaste when mixed with correct quantities of baking soda and salt.
- Hydrogen peroxide and benzoyl peroxide are sometimes used to treat acne.
- Can help in the removal of ear wax.
- Treatment of athlete’s foot.
- Treatment and prevention of cold sores and bad breath.
Epsom Salt
Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) can do much more than coax away an ankle sprain. The same pain relieving benefits can be applied to the whole body to alleviate stress, muscle cramps and tension. Suffering from dry skin, body acne or eczema? You’ll find that relaxing in an Epsom salt soak can soften skin, clear up acne and irritation.
For a full body soak, add 2-3 cups of Epsom salt to your bathwater and any scented oil you may enjoy (optional). Relax for 30 minutes and reap the benefits!
