Eating for Weight Loss: A Little Goes a Long Way

Making healthy food choices is an essential part of any weight loss program, and knowing what to eat can help dieters prepare wholesome meals that maximize calorie burn and fat loss. Adjust your diet to include these foods and help the pounds fall off!

Metabolism Boosters

A study published in the April 2004 issue of Obesity Research determined that dieters who consumed three to four servings of dairy products per day lost significantly more weight than dieters who ate little to no dairy. Low fat yogurt, hard cheeses and milk are recommended.

Fat Burning Foods

Omega-3 fatty acids help control cholesterol and regulate blood sugar, which can determine whether our bodies burn or store fat. Excellent sources of omega-3 include fish, olive oil, pumpkin seeds, flaxseed and leafy greens.

Satiety and Appetite Control

Fiber-rich foods cut appetite by creating a sense of fullness and aid in controlling cholesterol and blood sugar levels which can affect hunger. High fiber foods include oats, whole wheat bread, raw vegetables and fruits such as apples, which contain an average of 4 grams of fiber.

Thermogenesis

Thermogenesis is the increase of body heat generated during digestion. Consuming thermogenic foods may promote higher metabolism and increase the amount of calories burned in the process. The thermogenic properties of capsaicin in chili peppers and catechins in green tea may enhance fat loss when consumed regularly.

Hydration

Drinking the recommended eight glasses of water per day will boost energy and metabolism, curb your appetite and prevent your body from retaining water, which can lead to puffy, swollen extremities and a bloated appearance.
